Captain’s Report.
Before I start my report for the year I would like to reflect on how I came to be Captain for this year. Henry Scullion should have been Captain and I should have been his vice Captain. However, as many of you know, unfortunate family circumstances prevented him taking that position as he had to return to England and has been running the family businesses for the past year. He is well and has tried to join us at golf days during infrequent visits to Spain; unfortunately other matters have been more urgent. I hope he will be able to join us in the near future.
When my year as Captain started I said that my objectives were to make golf fun for the members and to re-introduce some tradition into San Miguel Golf Society.
During this year we have had regular medal competitions (9 in all) and some different competitions including yellow ball Stableford, scrambles, better ball medal and Stableford, bogey and a five-club competition (a total of 9 different competitions). From comments I have received many members have enjoyed this variety of competitions even when my instructions were misinterpreted or thought to be unclear. We have also had a total of 34 Stableford competitions.
I hope that my Captain’s prizes (a total of 10) and obscure questions (a total of 10) have added to your enjoyment of golf days through the year. I have certainly enjoyed my year as Captain and from comments from many members it would appear that I have achieved one of the objectives I had- to make golf fun for members.
I believe that the traditions I have reintroduced including the Captain’s drive-in, an eclectic competition, a medal trophy competition and a Stableford trophy competition have all been enjoyed by members. I enjoyed organising these competitions and it was a joy to see the faces of many of you and particularly the winners when these were announced at the Captain’s Dinner. I hope that these competitions will be continued by next years Captain Phil Birtwhistle and by future Captains. My one regret for the year was that, as my year of captaincy started late, time did not permit organising a match play knockout competition. Perhaps this is a challenge for Phil Birtwhistle next year.
I have been a member of San Miguel Golf Society for about 9 years and knew many of the members before I became Captain. Through the year I have tried to play golf with as many of you as possible. As a result I have got to know many more of the members and I hope that members have got to know me, not just as someone giving out the prizes each week.
My year as Captain has been made easier by the help given by a number of people including
-Ron Nicholson, our Secretary, for organising our golf days, checking scores and dealing with many things behind the scenes.
-Ray Battiste, our President, together with Barbara for checking everyone in and when necessary rearranging the groupings to deal with late arrivals.
-To the rest of the committee for their comments and suggestions at committee meetings and on golf days.
-To Anneli, my wife, who has given me a lot of support through the year and did a wonderful job in organising refreshments for Captain’s day.
My very sincere thanks to you all.
Finally I would like to wish my successor Phil Birtwhistle every success for his year as Captain and hope that you the members will give him the same support that you have given to me during this year.
