NEWSLETTER FOR JULY.

My thanks to our H/C secretary, Joe, for compiling June’s newsletter when Marg’ and I went over to the States to visit a good friend in San Diego. Our trip beautifully coincided with the US Open at the local “Torrey Pines” south course which we visited along with about 60,000 others on the Thursday and the Sunday. Although I couldn’t get a game I did manage to give Tiger a few tips which obviously must have worked for him!

The five Wednesday meetings in July kicked off with a stableford competition at Alicante Golf which was also the 4th of 5 games making up this year’s “Stableford Shield”. Well done to all those in the prizes, details of which can be viewed on the “Results” page, but a special mention to my vice, Brian, with an excellent 41 and Shelia Dean must have been getting some sneaky coaching off hubbie, Joe, coming in with one of her best ever – 43.

9th July saw us all at Altorreal for the 4th game out of 5 for this year’s “Medal Trophy”. With the course playing very long and slow greens adding to the difficulty, it’s hardly surprising that nobody beat, or even reached, par. Nearest with a net 73 was my better half, Marg’…….she must have been listening when I was sorting Tiger!

The third meeting of the month took us to El Plantio, near Alicante airport, where Santiago and his team always make everybody very welcome. It was hard to believe it was the middle of July when a few rumbles of thunder and a smattering of rain made us wonder whether we’d all actually finish. I played with our Presidente, Ray, and when asked about the possibility of calling everybody in the response was, “What! A bit of rain never hurt anyone – anyway I’ve got a good card going!” But his good fortune wasn’t to last as you can check out on the “Results” page.

Red hot temperatures and slow greens were waiting for us at Bonalba on the 23rd but in the course’s defence you can understand why they try to give them a little protection from the searing, mid-summer sun. As well as our usual prizes there were also four handsome cups up for grabs which were kindly donated by Richard from Bonalba. Both categories were won with very commendable 39 points resulting in Rob Neill (How can you be a bandit playing off 5 ?) taking the Gold and Mike Adams the Silver. This was also our final game to decide this year’s Stableford Shield, winner to be announced on Captain’s night 27th Sept. Our thanks to the course and well done to all the prize winners

Las Ramblas was the last venue of the month where unwelcome scowls greeted us from the “Miss Charming” behind the bar so our “après golf” and prize-giving was swiftly arranged at the very friendly Irish bar “The Stray Sod” in the nearby new complex “Las Fuentas”. Our thanks to all concerned for your great hospitality. “Old” Nigel Goude who hits the big five 0 this month had a storming game off his 5 handicap and took the gold category with 37 points. Other results are in the usual place. Although it’s a course that many local golfers can’t get to grips with, including yours truly, the recent facelift that it’s undergone has improved many fairways and greens. “They need a team of guys here armed with chainsaws !” was one of the more memorable comments after the game. That’s it for this month – happy golfing! Phil B.

LATEST COMMITTEE NEWS.

As Bonalba are treating their greens on 24/9 we’ve had to switch our meeting there to the week before (17th) and we’re now going to El Plantio on the 1st October for Captain’s Day with the dinner being on the following Saturday 4th October at Greenlands Golf Club. Please put it in your diaries and full details will follow. Don’t forget the Society’s rule – no attendance means no prize!
The 2 remaining games making up this year’s eclectic competition at Bonalba will therefore be 20/8 and 17/9 due to the earlier forced cancellation of 24/6.
It’s also worth noting that until the two shortened par 5’s with temporary greens at Alicante Golf are back to normal we will be playing them both as par 4’s as indicated on the tee boxes. This is to avoid possible unfair cutting of handicaps.
